FASHION FORECAST OR NOT
By Sandra Betzina
Women are no longer a slave to fashion. Today’s woman wears what she wants, but that is often not flattering. How many woman do you know who actually look attractive in a sweatshirt and sweatpants? Of course there are exceptions… but not many.
There is a big difference between fashion and style. Fashion is what they are showing in the stores and magazines but style is personal to you. If you do not already have a personal style, work on developing one. What a personal style involves are wearing items of clothing that are flattering to your body and make you excited about getting dressed in the morning. You might want to take a look at the book by Ari Seth Cohen called ADVANCED STYLE. Start taking photos on your phone of people who have a look which appeals to you. If you look closely, you will notice that the outfit goes – head to toe. Shoes and purses do not have to match but they should have some relationship to the outfit.
Developing a signature style takes practice. What that means is getting dressed in the morning. It is helpful to organize your closet by color. You would be surprised at what will work together. While you are at it, purge anything which does not fit or you have NEVER had a compliment on. Practice wearing different combinations.
Good looking shoes do not have to be uncomfortable. There are plenty of options today. I love the short boot; which looks good with pants, skirts and dresses. Heel height is optional.
Ugly underwear – get rid of it. One look in the mirror will tell you that it is time for new undies. Wacoal has flattering high rise underpants for $13.
What can you learn from fashion magazines? Color ideas – right now the colors are forest green and burgundy.Holiday season always features red. Spring colors will be brighter greens, all shades of pinks, golden tones. What about white? White ensembles are eye catchers but only for those who look good in white. Black and white – always good. All black – safe but boring. Jazz it up with a bright colored jacket or shoe.
FABRICS: What the magazines are calling velvet is actually cotton velveteen. This is easy to sew and luxurious to wear. Fur trim – I love it but not everyone does. For spring, look for large scale florals or unusual prints.
TOO MUCH BLING: Fashion magazines are full of delicate chains, multiple thin bracelets and rings with large stones. If this is not you, skip it. Oversized earrings and oversized necklaces seem a bit too much this season – wear one or the other.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN: Lather that face with some moisturizer. Italians use olive oil; Moroccans uses Argan oil. No matter but do something at night.
MAKE-UP does not have to be expensive. Maybelline has put out a 24 hour lipstick that really stays on; so does their waterproof mascara.
Never underestimate the importance of a good haircut. I wore long hair way too long. Once I cut it, I love the change.
